DYSLEXIAMATTERS

MACKENZIETHORPE has been supporting The British Dyslexia Association for many years. Raised in an industrial England town, Middlesbrough in the 1950s, Mackenzie Thorpe struggled with dyslexia throughout his childhood. He found confidence and courage through art and has become an internationally renowned talent whose work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across four continents.

"It is our responsibility to keep our eyes open to the wonderment of childhood." - MT

Dyslexia is a common type of specific learning difficulty that mainly affects the skills involved in the reading and spelling of words. It comes from a difficulty in dealing with the sounds of words, which makes it especially hard to learn to read words using phonics.

Suffering from severe dyslexia, school did not provide a thriving environment for the young Mackenzie. ‘I was labelled thick and lazy. I went through some difficult times at school and then working as a labourer and at Smiths Dock – but eventually this was what inspired me to become an artist'. The industrial environment and people of his upbringing remain a prominent feature and inspiration within much of his work, as can be seen in The Limited Edition print 'In His Footsteps'.

Mackenzie was the proud judge for the 2014 Dyslexia Awareness Week competition which was incredibly popular and saw some fantastic entries coming in! Entrants were asked to provide work that followed the theme for 2014, “Dyslexia Matters…” The prize winners were in attendance at the British Dyslexia Association Gala Awards Evening on November 25 at The RAF Club, London, to receive their awards which were presented by Mackenzie Thorpe.
